Laser Liposuction

Laser lipo is a new cosmetic procedure to remove body fat, claimed to be as effective as traditional liposuction without a hospital stay. The laser lipo suction technique uses lasers to break up fat before its removal from the body, reducing the need for harsh suction.

Laser liposuction can successfully be administered anywhere the body stores fat, typically: Chin, Underarms (“Bat Wings”), Back, Flanks (“Love Handles”), Buttocks, Thighs (inner and outer), Knees, Abdomen & Ankles.

Laser Lipo FAQ’s

What is Laser Lipolysis?

Laser Lipolysis (or laser liposuction) is a revolutionary fat removal technique that allows for fast recovery, minimal trauma and much finer results than traditional liposuction.

Laser liposuction can successfully be administered anywhere the body stores fat, typically:

  •    Chin
  •    Underarms (“Bat Wings”)
  •    Back
  •    Flanks (“Love Handles”)
  •    Buttocks
  •    Thighs (inner and outer)
  •    Knees
  •    Abdomen
  •    Ankles
Benefits of Laser Lipolysis over Traditional Liposuction

The La Visage Clinic uses the Syneron LipoLite™ device for all Laser Liposuction procedures carried out at the centre.

The advantages of LipoLite™ over traditional liposuction include:

  •    Most importantly – lower cost! Laser liposuction is typically cheaper than traditional liposuction as the procedure is quicker and does not require general anaesthesia.
  •    Safety – Laser liposuction is safer than traditional liposuction.
  •    No “loose” skin – Traditional liposuction can leave loose skin where fat has been removed. The LipoLite™ process stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen, causing the skin to tighten and firm.
  •    Little or no downtime – The LipoLite™ process is minimally invasive, and does not require a general anaesthetic. This means that you can drive to and from the procedure and be back at work within a day or two with minimal discomfort. For minor procedures, it may be possible to be back at work the same day.
  •    Minimal bruising
Who is a suitable candidate for Laser Lipolysis?

The Laser Lipolysis procedure is ideal for people who have a normal BMI and are not significantly overweight. You should already be maintaining a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet.
Realistic Expectations:
To be a good candidate for LipoLite™, you should have realistic expectations about the procedure’s capabilities. While LipoLite™ can improve your appearance and self-confidence, it won’t necessarily match your mental ideal, nor will it cause other people to act differently toward you.
Before you decide to have LipoLite™, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with the doctor during your consultation visit.

How effective is LipoLite™ and when can I expect to see results?

You can feel a difference in the fat volume at the time of the procedure. There are small changes visible after the swelling has settled down.
The overall result depends on the severity of the area to be treated, but dramatic improvements are usually seen approximately six weeks after treatment. Results will continue to improve over the next few months as the fat volume continues to decrease and the skin starts to tighten – with final results after four to six months.
What about cellulite?
Cellulite is essentially fat with hardened cell walls and fibrous bands causing tethering of the cells. The laser liposuction will break down the fibrous bands causing the dimpling of cellulite and destroys the fat cells!

Does Laser Lipo hurt?

A local anaesthetic is applied to the area to be treated and the procedure is virtually painless. The initial introduction of local anaesthesia may be uncomfortable and you may experience an odd sensation of the laser moving in the fatty tissue but this is not painful.

How many treatments will I need?

You should only need one treatment, but this does depend on your size and the number of areas you want treated.

The doctor doing your assessment will advise you on this at your initial consultation. A maximum of three areas can be treated at one time, and it will take approximately three hours to do one area and up to five hours to do three areas.

Will I need to take time off work?

You will need to take the day of the procedure off and ideally we would recommend that you take the day off after the procedure as well.

What must I do before treatment (pre-operative care)?

You will be advised at your initial assessment about pre-operative do’s and don’ts. ie: Avoid blood thinners including anti-inflammatories as they will lead to bruising.

This includes Omegas 3 and 6.

What must I do after treatment (post-operative care)?
  •    You will need to wear an elasticised garment on the treated area for two weeks.
  •    Take a course of antibiotics.
  •    No high-impact exercise for two weeks, but don’t stop exercising- cycling, walking and rowing are good aerobic exercises.
Safety and Complications

In normal circumstances there is no health risk associated with LipoLite™. One of our doctors will assess your suitability at your initial consultation.

Minor bruising or discomfort may occur in the first 24 hours. Antibiotics are given for five days after the procedure to prevent infection.

Our Doctor has been trained in using the Lipolite machine.

LipoLite™ is FDA approved

Although new to South Africa, LipoLite™ has been used extensively in the USA, Europe and the UK with excellent results.
The LipoLite™ device was approved in November of 2006, and today is one of the fasting-growing, safest procedures in the cosmetic surgery field.

Can I get Laser Lipo done on my arms?

Laser lipo can be performed on the arms with amazing results. The procedure is painless and once off. Dramatic improvement in the appearance of the arms is seen and the lipolite machine allows for skin tightening as well, so no sagging skin is noticed .

How does Laser Lipo work?

Laser lipo works by using a laser to melt fat which is then physically removed. The laser frequency is then reset and passed under the skin again to result in skin tightening. Laser lipo is performed under local anaesthetic and is completely painless.

What are the side effects of Laser Lipo?

Side effects of laser lipo include standard side effects of any surgical procedure: minimal bruising may occur since the skin is breached; pain- but this is minimal and patients often drive themselves to and from a procedure and are advised some rest the following day ( not compulsory); risk of infection because the skin is breached- this almost never occurs but just to be extra safe, patients are covered with antibiotics nonetheless. The side effects of laser lipo are minor and the procedure is extremely safe. It is performed in the doctor’s rooms and does not require a general anaesthetic. A detailed consult is carried out by the doctor at La Visage Aesthetic Clinic prior to undertaking any laser lipo procedure – to explain procedure ; its results; post-treatment care and review; go through side effect profile and answer any questions that you may have relating to the laser lipo procedure, costs, effects and/or side effects.
